Gary Coartney moved to the Bay Area 30 years ago after graduating high school in Arizona, and has primarily lived in the City of Concord. During the past 30 years Gary has followed his passions and dreams in the arts and in education. He has earned an Associate Arts Degree in Music from Diablo Valley College; a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Master of Arts in Music Theory & Composition from C.S.U. Hayward; a Single Subject Teaching Credential in Music from C.S.U. Hayward; and a Master of Science in Education Administration from National University; an Administrative Services Credential from National University.
Over the last 15 years, Mr. Coartney has been an educator in music for the Mt. Diablo Unified School District. 3 years as a Vocal and Instrumental music teacher at Ayers, Sequoia, Meadow Homes, and Westwood Elementary schools. The last 12 years he has had the incredible honor and privilege to be the Director of Instrumental Music at Concord High School. Throughout his tenure the program has developed and expanded to include: Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Stage Band, String Orchestra, Auxiliary and Winter Guard, Percussion Line and Winter Percussion, Winter Drum Major Program, and the Instrumental Music Leadership Council. This year program will include Music Technology, Guitar, Piano, Jazz Combo, String Quintet and a Mariachi Band.
Under Gary’s direction, the program has won multiple Sweepstakes Awards as well as Unanimous Superior Awards and countless 1st place trophies for most every ensemble. Mr. Coartney himself has been honored with the Harold Scoles/Richard Ryan Service Award, he was a Quarter Finalists for the National Grammy Music Educators Award, and has been recognized by the City of Concord for his service to the community over the last 12 years.
Mr. Coartney has been a Professional Trumpet player in the Bay Area over the last 30 years, and has played in multiple ensembles in most musical genres. He is also a Composer/Arranger and has recorded several albums during his career.
Gary’s greatest joy in life is his wife of 12 years Maronna, their three children Sarah, Tony and Cameron, and 1st grandson Samuel (with another on the way), and their three dogs Pickles, Mr. Man, and Lilu.
